Milestones are there to be celebrated.

It is only natural to want some recognition when we achieve something big, no matter how many other people have been there before us. The likelihood is that we had to work hard and go through a lot to get there, and that deserves some attention. Having a party at the end of it all is the logical conclusion. It's not like a lot of people want to have a huge celebration every time they do something; they just like to feel as if they are giving it the acknowledgement that it deserves.

Taking this into consideration, it is no wonder that family drama and fallouts often reach their height around milestone events and their celebration. It can really bring out the most upsetting parts of those relationships that were not in a good place to begin with. Some people only want to show up when things are going well, and not when their supposed loved ones are struggling. Others do not want to engage with their life at all, whether what they are experiencing is positive or negative. No matter the issue, it is upsetting to deal with as the person who just wants to enjoy their achievement.

  • A young woman was hoping to celebrate her high school graduation much like her seven older siblings did, with a party and a meal at a nice restaurant. However, her stepdad and mom did not want to do anything to mark this momentous occasion for her, despite her request.

    Her stepdad's excuse was that he couldn't afford it, but she was aware that was a lie. Feeling hurt for being treated differently, she decided to change her last name at graduation from her stepdad's to her biological dad's. Her mom and stepdad were upset at this, and she wondered if she had taken things too far.

  • desertboots NTA Sounds like you are the scapegoat in your family. Just grey rock step- dad and make no assumptions that he supports you. Call all your siblings and ask if they could rally and take you out to celebrate sometime soon. Dont mention it to your parents at all.

  • srgonzo75 NTA. Regardless of what he's done "for" you, his behavior toward you doesn't demonstrate paternal affection in my book. If he wants the courtesy which goes with the title, then he should behave in a way that lives up to the title.
